Meet Mary Mulari
After years of searching for the right job, Mary Mulari discovered it at her fingertips. Always an avid sewer, Mulari found her niche designing appliques, writing creative sewing books, and teaching.
While attending a local craft festival, Mulari recalls, “I noticed several decorated sweatshirts at the show and realized how valuable these soft, warm garments are in our wardrobes.” She experimented with sweatshirt decorations and began teaching a class on her discoveries for local community education. Since then, she has been teaching and sharing her ideas at seminars around the United States, and publishing books and patterns.
Designer Sweatshirts, her first book, proved so successful that in 1984 Mulari self-published a second book, Applique Design Collection. These were followed by seven other self-published books. Each book featured her own hand lettering and illustrations. Her decorating techniques now are presented on a variety of garments and accessories as well as sweatshirts. Sweatshirts with Style, Garments with Style, and More Sweatshirts with Style were published by the Chilton Book Company. Three of her books were chosen as finalists inCraftrends magazine's PCM Award of Excellence competition for new books in 1992, 1993, and 1995; Garments with Style won the 1995 award. She has designed patterns for the McCall Pattern Company and her own company, Mary’s Productions. Machine embroidery cards featuring her applique designs are now produced by Mary’s Productions along with a collection of reversible apron patterns. She has written seven books for Krause Publications. For Sewing with Nancy, Mary has written five Sweatshirt Makeovers books, now compiled into one book, Best Sweatshirt Makeovers. Mary Mulari’s Zip & Carry Bags was written for Sullivans USA in 2007. From 2010 - 2016 she self-published Stress Free Zipper Creations, Travel Gear Made Easy, Applique—Large & Small, All Occasion Fabric Wraps, and Sew Gifts—Make Memories. Her newest pattern, Second Chance T-Shirt Gifts, was published in 2016 and includes instructions for the easiest-ever T-Shirt Memory Quilt.
Mary Mulari learned to sew as a member of the Loon Lake 4-H Club in Palo, Minnesota. She has a bachelor of science degree in English education from the University of Minnesota Duluth. Her designs and writing have appeared in publications which include Notions, Creative Machine Embroidery and Designs in Machine Embroidery. She is the most frequent guest on PBS television's Sewing With Nancy. Her entertaining and inspiring seminars at sewing expositions, conventions, guilds, and stores all over the U.S. routinely sell out. She develops ideas for new publications and fabrics, tests products for the sewing industry, markets her books and patterns, and creates innovations for applique. She is a member of the American Sewing Guild.
By using her talents and creativity in sewing, designing, and writing, Mary Mulari's work has truly been found at her fingertips.
